First Day: Denver & Red Rocks

We arrived at Denver, stayed in Boulder the first night.  On the way, we stopped by the Red Rocks amphitheatre in Morrison, just south of Golden. It was built in the thirties.  You've probably seen it in concert videos for, e.g., The Moody Blues reunion a few years ago.

We arrived at Denver's extremely cool new international airport late afternoon.

Closer-up view of the airport roof.  (An architectural rendering, but close enough.)

Since we had a few hours of light left, we went down to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Golden.

Inside the visitor's building, there is a model of the Amphitheatre after its recent refurbishing.

Looking down at the stage and hills in the distance.  The theatre is carved into the side of the beautiful red sandstone hill.

You may recognize this stage from some rock concert videos, like the Moody Blues reunion.

There are seventy-ish rows of seats cut into the stone.  There are 128 seats across the rows, at least the long rows up at the top.

Given that we just landed in the thin air, that looked like a lot of stairs going down.

Bev went down the stairs to look around.  Look at the rocks on the side.

Then she had to climb back up all those stairs.  Fortunately, there is a good view as one comes up.

Bev took her time on the way up, looking at the scenery.

This is what the rock really looks like in the twilight.

This is what Bev was looking up at, the last sun on this one large rock spire.

There is a terrace restaurant down below now, too.  We didn't get there.

The plaque in the rock commemorates this construction during the Depression as a WPA project

We left just at sunset.
