Now that's a town
My niece goes to college in west Texas, way out there, at Texas Tech. She and her friends have spent way too much time driving back and forth across the state between school and home. But she stays awake enough to observe the culture.
According to her, the four pillars of civilization in west Texas are Dairy Queen, Subway, Shell, and Sonic. Every small town has all of these. As you drive through a town, if it doesn't have all of these on the main drag, then it's too small even to be a west Texas town. They don't have to be in sequence, but they all have to be represented.
