How Do You Find a Car Dealer?
On a drive to Houston, 2003
What is it about cars and streamers and pennants blowing in the wind? Since I was a kid, I've noticed that car dealers and gas stations always have strings of pennants or steamers blowing in the wind around the lot. Sometimes, for the truly understated, it's just flags on all the poles. And even, in the modern time, the modern style of flag, which is the hanging banner.
On the way to Houston and back, there are many incidents of this type.
What ho? A ringer: pennants where there are no cars. But wait! They sell trailers. So-called mobile homes. *Mobile*, get it? They're still vehicles of some sort, or so the name implies.
Wait, another ringer: flags in front of a lot full of sheds, garden sheds, tool sheds. Can this be the exception that tests the rule to the breaking point? But, no, the theory is saved! The sign on the business says "Portable Buildings." Portable! They move! Ta-da!
