By the side of the road, signs for real estate. Lots of signs for real estate. First, there are big billboards for builders. Like people know the names of the various builders in the area and care which company builds what houses. Well, of course they do care a little. But billboards? Lots of billboards?
But the really odd thing is the collections of small signs by the side of the road. Two by three foot paper or plastic signs on little stakes. Red or green backgrounds with white lettering, or sometimes white signs with bright primary-color lettering. They never occur alone, never just one sign by the curb, but a minimum clump of four or five. Always on a corner, pointing the way to some new development that is being built and sold. Always in little clumps of commercial lilies by the side of the road.
They appear on Friday nights. You see people with pickups filled with signs, hammering several signs into the grass. A friend's son had that job for a while, getting paid like twenty cents per sign. I assume that they disappear on Sunday night, uprooted by the same people that planted them, because I never see them on Mondays. Such short-lived little flowers.
Why always the clumps, though?
